What is Black Friday?

Also known as ‘Black Friday’, it is the day of the year with the biggest discounts in online shops.

This day has its origins in the United States and takes place on the same day as Thanksgiving. Black Friday marks the start of Christmas shopping, as there is no other time of the year with such great offers as those found on this day or days. In Spain it has been celebrated for several years, as in the case of Alannia Resorts, and more and more companies are joining this initiative.

History and origin of Black Friday

The term Black Friday came into use in Philadelphia around 1960. The term was prompted by police officers regulating traffic in the city, in response to the avalanche of vehicles and people crowding the streets after Thanksgiving Thursday and an expected football game between the army and the navy. Their use became increasingly popular and eventually spread to the rest of the states.

Curiosities about the origin of Black Friday

There are other theories to explain the origin of Black Friday. One of them claims that the origin of the term dates back to 1869, when two Wall Street brokers (Jim Fisk and Jay Gould) wanted to take over the entire gold market. They teamed up with Boss Tweed, a famous New York politician, but their plan was unsuccessful and they failed. The price of gold quicklyplummeted and many investors went bankrupt, so the day became known as ‘Black Friday’.
