History and Origin of Black Friday
The term "Black Friday" began to be used in Philadelphia around 1960. The expression was popularized by police officers who managed the city's traffic, as a surge of vehicles and people clogged the streets following Thanksgiving Thursday and the anticipated American football game between the army and the navy. Its usage spread and eventually extended to other states.
Curiosities About the Origin of Black Friday
There are other theories to explain the origin of Black Friday. One of them argues that the term dates back to 1869, when two Wall Street stockbrokers, Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, sought to corner the gold market. They conspired with Boss Tweed, a famous New York politician, but their plan was unsuccessful, and they failed in their attempt. The price of gold plummeted rapidly, leading many investors to bankruptcy, thus giving the day the name "Black Friday."
